ArtStart Elements of Design

Updated: Apr 8, 2019

After our discussion in last weeks blog, I thought it might be prudent to reiterate what the elements of design are in art.

There are 7 elements of design in art

Line, Shape, Colour, Texture, Form, Value, Space (or Scale).

Line:

can be straight, curved, freeform, horizontal, vertical, thick, thin, dark or light.

When lines intersect with themselves or another line they become a shape.

Shapes:

can be geometrical (square, circle, triangle)or organic(heart, spiral etc).

You can simplify any object you are drawing or painting into basic geometrical shapes, this will help you to make your drawings or paintings more accurate.

Colour:

is a function of light. For an object to have colour, the object reflects or emits that colour into our eye.

In painting colour is the general use or effect of the pigments in a picture.

Value:

is the lightness or darkness of an object in art. Art is produced by using a range of tonal and colour values. If you squint at a scene or photograph, you can see the relative lightness or darkness of an object.

Texture (patterns):

in art can be real textures (applying thick paint, paper or mediums to the paper or canvas to create a ‘bumpy’ surface) or visual textures (implied). Lines, shapes and values can imply texture.

Form:

When a shape gets the 3rd dimension it takes form. For example a circle when it gets the third dimension it becomes a sphere, a square becomes a cube, a triangle a cone. Form in drawings and paintings are illusions created by the difference between light and dark values.

Space (scale):

Paintings are usually confined to 2 dimensions (length and width) in space, the confines of the edges of the paper or canvas.

We give the illusion of space in a painting by overlapping objects and by changing the size and value of objects.

you can give the illusion of space in a drawing or painting by making the objects near the bottom of the page larger and more detailed. This will make them appear ‘nearer’ to us. Objects towards the top of the page are made smaller, less detailed and lighter in value which will make them appear further away from us in space.

It is by combining these design elements that we are able to create art.

For your convenience, I have created an ‘7 Elements of Design’ cheat sheet that you can print out and stick on your studio wall to help get your art started.
